How and where do we get our lessons in this class?

Information will be emailed to you and also available in the online classroom, which is open 24/7 after the start date for your class. In the online classroom, you will get the readings, videos, audio interviews, and discussion questions that make up resources portion of the class. You will have a chance to access these materials at your leisure and answer the questions so the class can enjoy hearing diverse points of view on the materials presented. This online classroom will remain open for three months after the end of the class.

Live Zoom calls are held five times throughout the class. You will be able to dial in from your phone or your computer.

What kind of equipment do I need for this class?

A computer with access to the internet
A phone

What is the schedule for the class?

The online classroom and community open to the class on the first day of class. You will receive an email when a new “step” appears in the classroom for you to do. The live Zoom calls schedule differs for each class and that schedule is available to you before you register.

What is the class structure?

You will have access to an online classroom where you will receive inputs (readings, videos, and audio interviews) and dialogue by written text several times per week. You’ll receive an email each day that there are new activities for you in the classroom (usually 3x/week).

There will be 5 live Zoom seminars where we will have the opportunity for both small- and large-group dialogue and inputs. All calls are recorded, should you not be able to join us live, and the recordings posted in the classroom within 48 hours of the call.

Online Classroom Help

If you want to change how often you are notified by the online classroom when something changes in it (you get a new assignment or someone comments on your thoughts, for example), you can change those settings by logging into the class and then clicking the settings gear in the top-right-hand corner to update your notifications.

Are these courses only for white people?

While the courses are geared toward the education of white folks about racism and their own privilege, we have had diverse classrooms for the previous offerings of these courses - and the dialogue and learning have both been greatly enhanced by the inclusion of the points of view of people of color. We also work to mitigate the differential emotional labor costs for BIPOC folks in the classes and offer BIPOC-only breakout groups when needed, appropriate, or desired.

I won’t be able to attend the live sessions. Can I still participate?

Yes, definitely! The live teleseminars are recorded and will be available to you within 48 hours. The other coursework is available to you as each step is published and you can always catch up if you miss a couple of days.

What preparation do I need to do before the course begins?

There is no pre-work. Just be ready to jump into the classroom when the doors open. In our experience, keeping up with the class daily is most effective - we know with online courses it is tempting to “do it later,” but the dialogue will be all the richer if we are progressing through the materials at essentially the same pace.

I was not able to keep up with the course workload. Can I still access it?

The classroom will be open for 3 months after the course ends. You will have access to everything until then.

I took the course before and would like to enroll again.

Great - we welcome Alumnus to join us in future Cohorts. To the extent you are able, please consider contributing to our work at the Friend rate of $50.

Are Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits available for these courses?

There are no CEU credits available for these courses at this time.

Do you offer Certificates of Completion?

If you would like a Certificate of Completion when you have completed at least 95% of this course, please email info@hardconversations.com and we would be happy to provide one to you.

A group of us would like to enroll.

There is a special discounted rate for groups of 10 or more. Please contact us at info@hardconversations.com to inquire.

I am hard of hearing. Can I still participate in the live teleseminars?

If you use VideoPhone and interpreters, Video Relay will work for you. We will provide you and your interpreter with a special dial-in number so you can be in the same breakout group. Please contact us at info@hardconversations.com if you need more assistance.

I have impaired vision. Can I still participate in the class?

It is possible to participate fully in this class if you have a screen reader. The faculty inputs are all audio, and there are videos/audios in addition to the faculty interviews to augment the readings. There are readings in the classroom that are not available on Kindle so a screen reader would work best. Please contact us at info@hardconversations.com if you need more assistance.
